Startled, the mouse lost balance, and Ganesha fell to the ground. His large belly burst open, spilling the food He had just eaten. Seeing this, Chandra (the Moon), in His full brilliance, mocked and laughed at Ganesha, making fun of His form. Enraged by the insult, Ganesha cursed the Moon, saying, “From this day forward, you will lose your brilliance and be cursed!” Realizing His mistake, Chandra Deva pleaded for forgiveness. The Devas intervened, and Ganesha softened the curse, allowing the Moon to wax and wane in cycles. However, He decreed that anyone who sees the Moon on Ganesh Chaturthi will face false accusations and bad luck. This is why even today, devotees avoid looking at the Moon on Ganesh Chaturthi night.
